As part of our research we have given out a questionnaire to our target audience of 18 - 25 to ask them about their music genre and video choices they prefer. This will give us an idea of what to include in our music video to make it most appealing to our audience.
We asked a total of 10 questions:
1. What is your gender?
2. What age are you?
3. What is your favourite music genre?
Indie Rock R&B Heavy Metal Country
4. What is your favourite artist?
5. What is your favourite band?
6. How many music videos do you watch a month?
0 1-5 6-10 -11-15 16+
7. Do you stream music? If yes how often?
8. What part of a music video do you notice the most?
Setting Costume Lightning Camera Angles Editing
9. Do you think having a good video affects the song sales?
10. Do you find a narrative more appealing in a music video?
From our questionnaire we have found that the most popular genre of music listened to is pop music with 10 followed by 7 people favouring R&B, one person liking rock and another listens to all genres of music on a daily basis.
The most frequent bands appearing in the questionnaire was the Chainsmokers and the 1975. The reason why the Chainsmokers maybe so popular at the moment is due to the fact they have 2 songs released in the recently which has been responded to well by the audience, and also they appeared on the VMA's to sing their new song 'Closer'.
The majority of people circled 16+ for how many music videos they watch a month. The reason for this is because of how many different ways we can consume music videos. We have very easy access to watch music videos, through YouTube on smart phones and computers. Also, their are music channels on the TV now so people can flick through and watch a load just within one hour.
Everyone but 3 answered that they streamed music through different sites such as Spotify while the other three listened to their music from YouTube.
Everyone said that yes music videos do affect song sales and make them increase, this is because the better the music video is the more people will talk about it and because social media is apart of almost everyone's lives so the video can be shared so everyone will talking about it.
Everyone also said that yes a narrative does make a music video more appealing this is because people are able to relate to the song more, understand the lyrics and the artist by making a connection with them.
1 male was only asked because our target audience is based on mainly girls due to the understanding of the song. It is a typical love song sung by a female and is all about love and heartbreak. The song is emotional and males may not be interested. So as this was a target audience questionnaire to get ideas to see what they would prefer in a music video, we didn't ask as many as we did females.
From our findings we can see that costume and setting is key feature in a music video, therefore when we come to filming we will be aware of making sure all costumes are accurate and the settings relate to the song to make the narrative good. The results also showed that having a narrative music video is very popular, luckily we had already chosen to have a narrative music video so now we must focus on making sure the narrative is good that will draw the attention of others.
