Melanie Martinez participated in MSG Varsity talent show but was eliminated in the second round. She then auditioned on The Voice and got to week 5 of the live rounds having a couple of the songs she sang on ITunes. After the show Martinez decided that she would continue with her music and worked independently to write and produce her music. She wrote the song Dollhouse and had a fan funded site produce her music video for it which she designed herself. Later she then signed with the record company Atlantic Records and released her album 'Cry Baby'.
The video above is one of Melanie's song from her album which is called 'Carousel'. The costume in this music video gives away to the audience that this is not original pop genre because the look is very alternative. Melanie appears to have 2 block colours on either side of her hair black and blue, with a little strip of pink in it. Compared to a pop music video costume and hair would be very natural and have costumes which are in fashion at the moment. In the video Melanie is wearing a pink tutu and a pink crop top, with a silver headband bow. This can be considered as childish as normally children would be wearing a tutu to play fancy dress in or to be a ballerina dancer. The setting of the music video has a direct link to the song and the lyrics, which is carousel and the video takes place in a fairground. This would not be too expensive to make as there are no extra graphics used in the music video, it is very simple as they have just used a fairground already there. Also, the music video takes place at night, which means there is no natural lighting being used and only artificial lighting from the fairground lights etc. This suggests that they wanted to give the music video an edge because although bright colours are used they wanted to show a contradiction between dark and light.
Lorde, also known as Ella is a New Zealand singer-songwriter and has wanted to become a singer from a young age. In the song she has released called 'Team' from the setting they have used are able to tell that the genre of the song is Indie Pop as they are very low-key places. They have used very natural settings and haven't spent large amounts of money on production. The music video also reinforces the lyrics she is singing. For example, 'Living in ruins' this is shown throughout the video by the setting, using rundown and low key places. The lyrics 'on each other team' is also shown in the video, in almost every shot in the people's different storylines they are helping each other out. The music video starts with a long shot that pans to the left and upwards to show the audience where they are and give them a feel of the music video. Also, we have a close up of Lorde and this is to introduce her as she starts singing and the close ups are used throughout the video to show her emptions for the song.
