Indie stands for independent music and wouldn't normally be associated with a well known music company. Independent artists and record companies are likely to produce and make their own music. Artists who are apart of a massive record company would usually have a lot of input etc. from other people. However, people who are part of an independent label usually have full control and not interested in big names. Indie music was first discovered in the 1950s - 1960s but wasn't much of a big thing until the 1980s.
Melanie Martinez participated in MSG Varsity talent show but was eliminated in the second round. She then auditioned on The Voice and got to week 5 of the live rounds having a couple of the songs she sang on ITunes. After the show Martinez decided that she would continue with her music and worked independently to write and produce her music. She wrote the song Dollhouse and had a fan funded site produce her music video for it which she designed herself. Later she then signed with the record company Atlantic Records and released her album 'Cry Baby'.
The video above is one of Melanie's song from her album which is called 'Carousel'. The costume in this music video gives away to the audience that this is not original pop genre because the look is very alternative. Melanie appears to have 2 block colours on either side of her hair black and blue, with a little strip of pink in it. Compared to a pop music video costume and hair would be very natural and have costumes which are in fashion at the moment. In the video Melanie is wearing a pink tutu and a pink crop top, with a silver headband bow. This can be considered as childish as normally children would be wearing a tutu to play fancy dress in or to be a ballerina dancer. The setting of the music video has a direct link to the song and the lyrics, which is carousel and the video takes place in a fairground. This would not be too expensive to make as there are no extra graphics used in the music video, it is very simple as they have just used a fairground already there. Also, the music video takes place at night, which means there is no natural lighting being used and only artificial lighting from the fairground lights etc. This suggests that they wanted to give the music video an edge because although bright colours are used they wanted to show a contradiction between dark and light.
Lorde, also known as Ella is a New Zealand singer-songwriter and has wanted to become a singer from a young age. In the song she has released called 'Team' from the setting they have used are able to tell that the genre of the song is Indie Pop as they are very low-key places. They have used very natural settings and haven't spent large amounts of money on production. The music video also reinforces the lyrics she is singing. For example, 'Living in ruins' this is shown throughout the video by the setting, using rundown and low key places. The lyrics 'on each other team' is also shown in the video, in almost every shot in the people's different storylines they are helping each other out. The music video starts with a long shot that pans to the left and upwards to show the audience where they are and give them a feel of the music video. Also, we have a close up of Lorde and this is to introduce her as she starts singing and the close ups are used throughout the video to show her emptions for the song.
'Pop' is an abbreviation for popular music and it originated from the west of the world between the 1950s and 1960s and is similar to the genre of rock and roll. The conventions of pop music videos is for the song to be upbeat and all about having a good time. Almost all of pop music videos will follow a narrative. The colours in pop music videos are more likely to be bright and colourful to make it stand out to attract the audience, the costumes worn will be the fashion for that gender in the time period.
The first pop song i will be analysing is Selena Gomez - Good for you. The music video begins with a wide shot of Selena sitting lying on the sofa looking directly in the camera. In various different shots it shows her lying and rolling around the sofa. This suggests that she is being sexualised as she is lying in a provocative position, this is supported by the title 'Good For You' she is lying down to show that she is good enough for the person she is singing about and the positioning suggests she is willing to give him everything. In the setting the colours appear to be very bright which adheres to the stereotype of a pop music video this is to make everything to stand out and be distinct from one another. This attracts the audience because they are being shown that this song is fun and lovable, this song doesn't show any black and white features which is normally shown to suggest to the audience that it is sad. However, Selena has not used this as she simply is showing that this song should be played for enjoyment.
We are shown various long shots of the her lying on the sofa, but to the corner of shot they have
chosen a location where there appear to be cracks in the wall. As the room also looks empty with only the sofa there it can suggest that the room and place she is in is a run down building, suggesting that she hasn't got a lot of money and if she is living with a boyfriend etc. between them there is no money, but when she is singing it doesn't matter what they have because she is good enough. The song lyrics begin with ' I'm 14 carat' which is quiet expensive, so by saying she herself is expensive is showing that whoever she is singing to that she is worth it and deserves to be good enough, regardless of financial states.
Another setting used in Selena's music video is dull and has used very dull lighting. This scene shows Selena when she is in the shower and can suggest she is very vulnerable. This part could suggest a small narrative, she had recently sang about wanting to her nice and wearing her dress tight, all to impress this boy. This scene is then introduced when she sings the lyric ' I just wanna look good for you', this is suggesting that she preparing and getting herself ready to see him. This is also adhering to the stereotype of the music genre because she is suggesting the only way that her boyfriend can be happy or feel as if she is good enough is by her exploiting herself.
From the beginning of Justin Bieber's music videos of As Long As You Love Me the audience is able to tell it is a narrative because the first minute or so is filled with a man talking to Justin and warning him to stay away from his daughter. However, Justin does not listen to this and we are shown a close up of a note he has written telling his girlfriend to meet her at the train station. This is similar to a Romeo and Juliet love, where the young lovers cannot be together because their parents forbid it. The narrative continues throughout the music video as it shows them trying to running away and the at the end we are shown more parts of them acting.
The costume Justin is placed in is dark clothing with and is wearing a silver chain, later in the song Big Sean is featured and he is wearing a gold chain with much more jewellery such as an earring, rings, watches and the hat suggests a 'gangster' look and suggests his wealth. This adheres to the costume for the genre of rap music. By placing Justin in silver and Big Sean in gold it highlights the differences between pop and rap singers.
Women are not shown much in this music video, however, the lead female is shown to show her affection towards Justin in various shots where they are close and intimate. Her clothing is very casual and is her skin is not over shown. However, the backup dancers when Justin is in a car park is shown to be wearing crops and short shorts, which still suggest women are being exploited for male viewers. As alternative costumes they could be wearing normal tracksuits etc.
The video is mostly low lighting, which subverts the stereotype of the pop music genre as normally they are associated with bright colours. The subversion maybe because of the narrative, it is a dark subject on how the lovers try to run away when no one is watching it is best to do it at night. Therefore there won't be any natural lighting from the sun etc. They have used natural lighting when they are showing the good memories between the ones who are running away. They have added an effect on this to represent that these are in fact memories and to separate this from the present day they used a haze effect.
In Little Mix's video of Hair they have adhered to the conventions of a pop music video by showing a strong narrative throughout the music video. It starts off with one of the girls looking through their social media account of Instagram and seeing her ex boyfriend or boyfriend with someone else. This draws the attention of young children because they are also users of social media. When the girl sees the photo she immediately calls up her friends for a shoulder to cry on and invites them round where they have themselves a party between the 4 of them to cheer her up. Having 4 girls in the band shows girl power which is supported by all of them showing up and being supportive of their friend.
This video can attract teenage girls because of the themes through the video, singing about people who have cheated or not worth your time, but also they are shown being girls by dressing up, doing their hair and makeup. The males can be attracted to the video by the number of close ups they are by showing the girls heavy make up, you can see the thick eyeliner and the highlight they have on to define their faces and to make themselves look pretty, and in the case of the song make them feel better because of what has happened. The males can also be attracted to their costume the girls are wearing. Although it is night time and most girls wear a pair of pyjama trousers and a t-shirt but they are seen to be wearing silk suggesting wealth and wearing shorts and crop tops. This again is showing off their skin and body parts, where men can believe women can be treated as a sexual object because of what they are wearing to bed when no one will see them.
Sean Paul the rapper is featured in this video and his costume is similar to Big Sean in the video above. Sean Paul is seen to be wearing the gold jewellery, the hat, the sunglasses to make him look a mystery and also he is wearing oversized clothing, which adheres to the genre of rap.
The lighting in the video is very bright 3 of the girls are wearing light pastel clothes to show happiness and to put a positive spin on the subject they are singing about, which is what pop music is about, trying to make things positive and upbeat. Jessie is the girl wearing the black costume, this could suggest that she is more of the dark horse of the group as the others and all aspects of the music video seem to bright and to be associated with happiness and good things.
In the future I believe the music videos for the genre of pop will continue the same with the bright and the upbeat tunes. Girls will remain to be a sexual object but this can change by having the role models of people like Beyoncé who are becoming more about girl power and women be treated equally. Women should be able to feel comfortable in their own body and if they wish to show this then that should be acceptable because it is no different from a male showing himself. However, women should not be sexualised for men and in their videos for them.
Country songs are most likely to be written by the artist themselves because they draw from personal experience, which means the song will probably have deep meanings to their songs. In their music videos it would usually be a narrative for the deep meaning to their song. The artist would normally portray the main character to show emphasise their song they have written. Usually country artists have learnt to play a musical instrument and this is normally shown in the music video. A stereotypical place for a country music video is for them to be in the fields or a little city, showing natural environments such as lakes. The props used and normally thinks like trucks while the costumes are usually cowboy outfits, like a check shirt.
Taylor swift was a country singer when she started her career at 16, she is now 26 and has had 5 albums and 3 of them are under the genre of country however, her 4th album red is country with a twist of pop. While her 5th album she comes away from her genre of being a country artist and transistors to pop music instead. One example Taylor has shown her country genre is in the song Tim McGraw that she wrote herself when she was 16. The music video starts off with an establishing shot of a lake setting where she is holding an old fashion radio, this setting adheres to the stereotype of the genre of country because the lake is very family friendly, normally if the song was related to family they would show them fishing and having a fun time. While Taylor has used the lake as it looks peaceful and obviously it has a meaning to why she has gone their to think and listen to the radio. Country artists are usually from the southern states where the genre originated from. This means they are more to old fashion things and are all about good morals. By having the prop of an old fashion radio it shows it isn't all about the latest technology and is about the old, meaningful things that matter. One stereotype of country music is to have instruments such as banjos. This is shown straight away as the song starts, which represents
she is country straight away if no one were to know her genre of music.
One of Taylor's costume is a white dress, the colour of the dress represents innocence and purity. The fact she is lying in the grass with an old fashion radio makes her seem all the more sweet. Although, she is wearing a dress with no sleeves, I wouldn't say in this video Taylor is dressing in a provocative way, as the long is about young love and is suppose to be innocent and sweet. In later shots she is seen in field with her boyfriend wearing jeans a casual top, if this was a R 'n' B or pop song, the women would be seen to be wearing minimal clothing to try and impress their love interest. Taylor can been seen to have a darker side, as she sings 'when you think happiness, I hope you think of that little black dress.' This suggests that even innocent people have another side to them because she appears to be wearing white in the video but is singing about a black dress that should make her boyfriend happy. The black represents a more darker side. However, it could just be symbolic to them where they shared a good memory together.
The males costume is very stereotypical with the cowboy style, a buttoned shirt and jeans, also to reinforce their culture of country, he has been seen to be driving a truck which is also stereotypical for country music videos. The use of this prop also reinforces that this music video is a narrative as when Taylor is singing about things they appear in the music video. For example when she sang about the 'Chevy truck' he appeared in a scene driving it. Taylor continued to show a narrative through her music video by providing flashbacks of her time with her boyfriend and showing the audience the good time they used to have. These scenes may represent what actually happened during her time in her real relationship, also she is referring to months in her song for example 'September saw a month of tears' this shows she drew from personal experience which adheres to the stereotype of country music videos. Taylor drawing from experience is further supported by the number of close ups we are seeing throughout the video, these shows us the expressions Taylor is feeling which shows that she has gone through the emotional experience.
Another stereotype Taylor is adhering to is showing the instrument she is playing. Comparing country to pop normally in a pop music video the artist wouldn't show that the musical instruments used to create the song. However, Taylor is shown playing her guitar which again shows the audience that she is writing these songs herself and showing them her ability of music.
The next music video which is country music video is by Lucy Hale -You Sound Good to Me. In the beginning of the music video we hear the sound of crickets this suggests that the video will taken place outside which adheres to the stereotype of a country music video because the country music is all about family, friends and the wilderness. We are also shown long shot of the setting they are in, which is in the field and on the road surrounded by a lot of grass and countryside.
Lucy is also shown to be on a road trip with her friends the car they are in is very different from the video above. Taylor has used a very country like truck whereas the friends are in a car that would be seen in different genres of music. By having a group of friends in the music video and showing they are having a good time suggests that country artists value each others friendships.
On the road they arrive at a small hut which named 'Rustic can you grill' with a animal figure in-between the words. The use of the prop shows that country artists have very different styles and
tastes, the animal figure wouldn't be seen in pop or a rap music video because it wouldn't have any resemblance to their songs and wouldn't relate to their genre of music. While running into the shop they try on different floppy/straw hats, in a R 'n' B video artists and characters would be seen to be wearing snapbacks to show their gangster look. The boys costume is not very conventional however, the girls especially Lucy who is the artist of the song is shown to be wearing Jeans, cowboy boots, with a big buckle belt.
The last scene is Lucy and her friends arriving at a camp fire, this further supports the fact the country artists are about the wilderness and friendships by spending time together. While round the campfire they are found singing and playing instruments. Having instruments being shown in the music video is stereotypical for a country music video because it usually shows that the artist is drawing from their experience. However, Lucy is not shown to be playing a musical instrument which could suggest that she has not written the song for herself and doesn't have that much of a personal connection to it as Taylor Swift would with her songs. However, has chosen her song to be her single because she relates to it.
The last country video to analyse is Carrie Underwood's song 'Smoke Fire'. The setting of the music video is in the middle of nowhere, with only surroundings of plants and trees. The truck used adheres to the stereotype of country music videos and this truck is similar to the one used in Taylor Swift's song above. However, in her music video a male is shown driving the truck, while in Carrie Underwood's video she is shown driving the truck which subverts the stereotypes of the music video as males are seen to be the ones driving in a masculine car.
While the female driver is out on the road she comes across a diner, this sort of narrative is similar to Lucy Hale's music video where they are out on the road and come across a small hut shop. Country music videos are known to be show family or have a rustic theme to it. The diner shows up in the music video when she is singing 'Working three jobs, feeding four little mouths in a run-down kitchen'. This is also similar to Taylor's music video as it relates to the lyrics they are singing. This supports what a Country music video entails, and supporting that most country music videos have a narrative to them.
Her music video also adheres to the many stereotypes of country music as her costume she is in represents country. The picture below is a long shot of Carrie showing that she is hitchhiking, this is because previously in the video her truck had broken down which then forces her to walk and find herself a ride. This gives more support to the fact the country music videos mostly follow a narrative. The long shot suggests that Carrie is still in the same location as she was when the music video started, showing that she hasn't gotten far because thje3 surroundings are similar. The long shot also shows all of Carrie's costume, she is shown to be wearing a white plain top but also she is wearing a check shirt which is normally worn by those in the southern states of America, her costume also adheres to the stereotype as she is wearing knee high brown boots. The use of the prop in the photo is showing that she is a musician because she is carrying a guitar and the truck that is in the picture takes her to a show where she performs with the guitar. The performance part of the video suggests that Carrie Underwood has a personal experience with the song because we are shown many close ups of the guitar and her singing into the microphone to show her passion she has for this song.
This is different from Lucy Hale's song as she isn't shown playing an instrument, where as Taylor and both Carrie have which can suggest that mostly country songs are personal to the artists because they write and have a connection with it because they are able to play an instrument.
The future for country music I believe will still be the same, Taylor's music video was released in 2009 and Carrie Underwood's was released in 2015 and they have very similar aspects to their song, which adhere to the stereotypes of country. Lucy Hale's music video was released in 2014 and also had similar characteristics although may not be completely the same all three had a narrative and from the pitch and musical instruments used in the song you are able to tell they are all country.
R 'n' B is also known as Rhythm and Blues and was founded in the 1940's by African American music. Originally R 'n' B was only listened to by a black race, however, this genre has expanded and now people of different races. Typical musical instruments you would find in a Rhythm and Blues song is a drum kit, bass guitar, saxophone, piano, organ and vocals. Stereotypically in an R 'n' B music video men's fashion would normally be for them to be topless and wearing jeans, this is to attract the female audience to watch the music video. People in the video would normally be wearing chains and have tattoos to show a street vibe. Women would be shown to be wearing minimal clothing to show their stomachs and cleavage, also their hair would be styled in a certain way which is eye-catching and their make up would be very defined to attract a male audience.
One example of R 'n' B is Beyoncé and her song Crazy In Love which was released in 2003, this was soon after she had broken away from her Girl band Destiny's Child, which consisted of two other members. Beyoncé's costume was very revealing, in the opening she was wearing a loose white top, short shorts which just covered her bum and red high heels.
This is a close up of her face, this shows her make up to be very natural and not over dramatic. The close up shows her defined cheekbones, which shows that she has a good complexion that shows of her natural beauty. This addresses the male audience because they are attracted to someone being naturally beautiful with a bit of make up rather than a women who is plastered in make up.
This mid shot is showing her lack of clothing, the colour white represents innocence and purity. However, this contradicts itself because the top she is wearing is tight and short cut, this suggests that she isn't as innocent as seems especially as she is wearing red high heels, as seen in the picture below. The top is very revealing also, by her stomach area which shows that when she moves the audience are able to see her midriff, because her costume doesn't involve coverage it can suggest that she wants all the men to be attracted to her and wants the attention. Her body language shown in the picture above shows that she is strutting around in the street, this can suggest she is showing the street what she has got.
The use of the colour red represents danger, power, and as being a sexual object. We are given a close up of her shoes because the audience had not yet seen a whole shot of her in what she was wearing. Normally with a pair of shorts and a top you would wear a pair of trainers or canvas shoes, however, Beyoncé is wearing high heels which shows she is different and up for a challenge. Also, it can mean the she is quite a handful as she is coming out of what a the normal outfit would look like and she shows that she is willing to break boundaries because she is 'Crazy in Love'.
There is also many more close ups of her body parts for example her bum in her short blue shorts. This is to show that women are sexual objects and men can have them when they want. The editing of the shots are quick cutting and when we are shown Beyoncé body the shots flash to Jay Z, this suggests that she is strutting around and dressing provocatively for the male attention because she is obsessed and desperate for this man.
From 30 seconds to 48 seconds Beyoncé breaks out dancing but in a very sexual manner. The lyrics at this part of the song are 'I look and stare so deep in your eyes, I touch you more and more every time , When you leave I'm begging you not to go, call you name two or three times in a row,
such a funny thing for me to try to explain, how I'm feeling and my pride is one to blame. 'Cuz I know I don't understand, just how your love can do what no else can.' This suggests that even when the man says he is leaving she is left wanting more and doesn't want him to leave, her love is so strong that she doesn't understand it herself, she is too involved and obsessed with this man to do anything to get his attention. She is dancing for him and is wanting to give him everything she has.
The males in the music video is an accurate representation of male in a R 'n' B music videos when Beyoncé is singing about the love saving her, Jay Z appears in a shadow, we can not yet see his face and he has not been introduced to previously before either. The audience get a sense of mystery, also, the fact the in the music video we have not seen them both together it shows that she loves the chase and mystery she gets from him. We get a close up of a lighter, but we only know it is a lighter because he lights it, we then see a shot of him dropping it on the ground and the flame travels to a car, which then sets alit. This is stereotype towards his ethnicity also, because black people are associated with gang and crimes. There is a long shot shown of Jay Z looking back at the car blowing up, this could suggest that he is proud of what he has done and admiring what he has achieved. In long shot we get to see the whole of Jay Z, he is wearing all black which represents darkness which could mean he isn't good enough for Beyoncé. He is also wearing a hat which is slightly to the side to create the mystery, and to hide from Beyoncé because of her obsession. To finish off the outfit his accessories is a chain around his neck to represent a gangster look but also the chain and the watch represents his wealth.
In this music video Beyoncé is representing women stereotypically for women in the genre for R 'n' B, the song adheres to the conventions of the genre for a fast paced song as the video consists of flash cuts throughout to show the rush she has for this man. The costumes give an accurate representation as throughout the video she has been shown wearing minimal clothing and being treated as sexual objects, also her hair and make up show her beauty without it being to dramatic. The camera angles are placed in positions that give the best light for her and ways in which they make her look sexualised. The men are also represented accurately in the video, they are covered and hidden and wanting the women to come to the. He has been stereotyped to be 'gangster' and to have a poor attitude.
Another R 'n' B example is Nelly ft Kelly Rowland's song Dilemma. This music video adheres to the stereotype of the genre R 'n' B as the video is based around a black ethnicity. However, subverts the stereotype of black people in a positive way. Normally, they would be associated with violence and crime, however, in the video they are shown to be in a nice neighbourhood, with build up houses instead of the neighbourhood looking like it is in poverty. The music video type is a narrative as it shows the story of a new girl arriving on the street, wanting to be involved with Nelly but cannot pursue a relationship with him as she already has a boyfriend.
At the start of the music video Kelly appears to be wearing minimal costume from the start of the music video. The beginning of the video she is showing a lot of herself in terms of her upper body.
When she is sitting on the steps she is showing a lot of cleavage and her arms and shoulders are showing. Also, in another shot Kelly is wearing a crop top and throughout the music video she is dressed in a provocative way. In one shot she is wearing a jumpsuit, that shows all her shoulders as well as her legs. This is in the part of the story when her boyfriend is picking her up in his car. However, Nelly is also out on the streets with his friends and is watching her get into the car. Kelly's character in the music video has decided to wear this sort of clothing, so she can get the attention she wants from her neighbour across the street. Also, she has been put in all these provocative clothing to attract the male audience for more views for the music video. We can also see the other women who are out on the street are dressed in the same way as Kelly. A couple of the women are wearing backless short tops for the male attention.
The men in the video are always covered and wearing baggy clothing, similar to Beyoncé the men are also wearing sunglasses which could mean they are hiding their identity, giving the women a sense of mystery. They are also wearing gold chains and gold casings in their teeth, this shows that the men have a sense of wealth, which is further showed by the range of different expensive cars we can see in the neighbourhood such as a Land Rover and a Mercedes. However, the men can appear to be 'gangster' as the do have the chains and also Nelly has a plaster on his face which could represent that he has recently been in a fight. This could be part of the storyline as to why Kelly is attracted to him in the first place because it shows that he is a 'bad boy' and tough.
We are shown many close ups of Kelly's face this is to show her complexion in her face showing that she has a glowing look, her make up is also very natural which shows that she isn't trying to be someone she isn't by having a full face of heavy make up. Although her face make up is very natural, in some shots her mascara and eyeliner can be heavy, this is to make her eyes stand out and look bold to glimmer, for Nelly to be attracted to her. The close ups are to show her emotions she is singing about. In the beginning, she is shown to be sad and emotional because she is wanting Nelly but cannot have him. She sings 'I love you, I need you, Nelly I love you, I do need you. No matter what I do all I think about is you, even when I'm with my boo, you know I'm crazy over you.' By having his name in the verse she letting the audience know that she is singing about Nelly and even when she is with her boyfriend she isn't really with him and is 'crazy' for Nelly. this relates back to the song title of 'Dilemma' because she has to decide who she is really happy with.
The link above shows my last example of a R 'n' B music video. This music video was released in
2015 by The Weekend. The music video starts off with a car upside which represents the driver has been in a car accident. As the song starts we see a man come out of the car, his ethnicity is black and stereotypically they are associated crimes. The man appears to be hurt, with blood running down his face and cuts and bruises on his hands. He gets out of the car and although he shows he is in pain he carries on showing he has the strength like a stereotypical man, he doesn't want to show the audience his pain. We are shown the cuts and bruises through a close up of his face this is so the audience can see how damaged he is and how bad the car crash was. Later he shown opening the door for the women getting out and this is considered as a gentlemen action, which is another stereotype of a man. The costume the lead male is wearing is similar to the two other videos above, all three videos show them wearing chains. Also, in this video the male appears to be wearing an earring. The use of these costume ideas show that he is trying to dress to impress the female audience, this is supported by the language he is using throughout the video, he continues to use profanity, this could suggest that he wants to act 'hard' for the audience because he thinks that the women would like someone who is rough around the edges.
When the women get out the car they are both in minimal clothing, where short cut dresses and are seen to be always behind the male lead this suggest that women are seen to be always be following him and chasing after him. Also, the women following him around suggests that they need a man to know where they are going and that they cant be by themselves.
The last part of the video he is walking along the street by himself and then enters an abandoned house. Inside the house it is completely empty, there is shattered glass on the floor and some last bits of furniture is covered in old dusty sheets. This suggests that the no one has been in there for a long time. With the low key lighting it almost makes the house look abandoned and because of his ethnicity he is associated with crimes and being a troublemaker. The questions the audience will be asking is has he broke into the house? and why is he at a random abandoned location? When he walks into the abandoned house the music changes because of the bridge. The music changes from an upbeat tune with his deep voice singing and profanity to soft piano music and his voice is a little higher, this creates more mystery for this music video because the audience can question what is happening and the change in the pitch of the music adds to that.
As the song comes to an end we can see a glow of red on his face the camera then turns to a long shot of a room with two women sitting on the bed in the sexual positions. Also, in this shot we can see that they have used red lights this is to represent the passion shown that could gone on in this scene but also maybe he his entering a danger zone. The women are also being sexualised as they are dressed provocatively, again seen in minimal clothing they are wearing lingerie.
From my research of R 'n' B music videos through the years it is clear the stereotypes have remained the same. With women always appearing to be wearing minimal clothes and men in baggy clothing, hidden, with chains. This suggests that women can be seen as devalued because of their sexual nature. The one thing that has changed is the fashion sense, women in the other two videos are wearing jeans and in the weekend video they are wearing dresses. also, the men in other two videos are wearing long basketball sort of tops whereas in this one they are bomber jackets and t shirts. Another thing which has changed in R 'n' B is the amount of profanity used, in the first two videos which were from 2002 the language was kept to a minimal. However, in the last video by The Weekend there was strong language throughout the song. In the future, I believe that women are still going to be treated as sexual objects and men are still going to be using profanity in their songs as we have seen throughout the progression of the videos above.
